Strong Infrared Emission from the Extrasolar Planet

چکیده
We report detection of strong infrared thermal emission from the nearby (d = 19 pc) transiting extrasolar planet HD189733b, by measuring the flux decrement during its prominent secondary eclipse. A 6-hour photometric sequence using Spitzer’s infrared spectrograph in peak-up imaging mode at 16 μm shows the secondary eclipse depth to be 0.551±0.030%, with accuracy limited by NRC Postdoctoral Research Fellow

STRONG INFRARED EMISSION FROM THE EXTRASOLAR PLANET HD 189733b
We report detection of strong infrared thermal emission from the nearby (d 1⁄4 19 pc) transiting extrasolar planet HD 189733b by measuring the flux decrement during its prominent secondary eclipse. A 6 hr photometric sequence using Spitzer’s infrared spectrograph in peak-up imaging mode at 16 m shows the secondary eclipse depth to be 0:551% 0:030%, with accuracy limited by instrumental baseline...
متن کاملThe detectability of extrasolar planet surroundings I. Reflected light photometry of unresolved rings
It is expected that the next generation of high-contrast imaging instruments will deliver the first unresolved image of an extrasolar planet. The emitted thermal infrared light from the planet should show no phase effect assuming the planet is in thermal equilibrium. But the reflected visible light will vary versus the phase angle. Here, we study the photometric variation of the reflected light...

متن کاملDetectability of planetary rings around an extrasolar planet from reflected-light photometry
The next generation of high-contrast imaging instruments will provide the first unresolved image of an extrasolar planet. While the emitted infrared light from the planet in thermal equilibrium should show almost no phase effect, the reflected visible light will vary with the orbital phase angle. We study the photometric variation of the reflected light with orbital phase of a ringed extrasolar...
متن کاملGiant Planet with a stratosphere ?
We have carried out a search for the 2.14 μm spectroscopic signature of the close orbiting extrasolar giant planet, HD 179949b. High cadence time series spectra were obtained with the CRIRES spectrograph at VLT1 on two closely separated nights. Deconvolution yielded spectroscopic profiles with mean S/N ratios of several thousand, enabling the near infrared contrast ratios predicted for the HD 1...
